About
An improvised live-electronics project.
Attorneys General is a project under the direction of Matthew Byars, based in Baltimore, MD. Byars also plays in The Caribbean and co-produces the NPR-distributed podcast Essential Tremors.
The project takes its cue from the work of Martin Swope, sound engineer for Mission of Burma, on their live album The Horrible Truth About Burma (1985). Working with a tape machine, Swope seized elements of the band's sound in flight, looped them, and dismantled them in spontaneous and unexpected ways.
Byars has adapted that method for a rotating cast: three or four players — every time different — generate wholly improvised sound routed through a mixing board he operates.
